Book Reviews

Keep it in Yor Knickers

Author: J R R Sanders
Review Date: 22 Nov 2011

Well, fasten your seat belts and get ready for the ride of your life with this book.  Fabulous and Fifty she may be, however the author Judi Sanders sure gets you going from the very first page of this book.  From the outset this is a book where you keep turning the pages to find out what tragedy, triumph or sexual activity this woman is up to.

It took me five hours from start to finish and was a thoroughly enjoyable read.  I am not easily put off by sexual romps and found myself somewhat envious of the 'romantic' and idyllic holiday destinations given throughout the book.

I have had the pleasure of meeting this author and although it is a memoir with a little fiction thrown in (for good measure) she refuses to divulge which parts have been added for that extra bit of zest!!!

You certainly get a bang for your buck in this easy to read book.  I heartily recommend it, a great read

Naked At Our Age

Author: Joan price
Review Date: 04 Oct 2011

Just because you are over 50, or over 60, and yes even over 70, it does not mean we are no longer capable of being hot and sexy.... no matter what body parts point downwards rather than upwards.

This video by Joan herself says it all.  Wonderful reading, wonderful fun and YES sex is HOT after you turn 60.  Joan has all the information you need to have an enjoyable sex life as we age.

Half the Sky

Author: Nicholas D. Kristof &Sheryl WuDunn
Review Date: 14 Aug 2011

IF YOU CARE ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS - this is a must read.

This may be one of the most important books I have ever read. Since reading this book I have become a member of the local chapter of Zonta International and actively work advancing the status of women locally and globally.

This book has certainly left an impression on me. I enjoyed the fact this book was so well researched and really told it how it is for many women and girls and how Nn Government Organisations succeed in making a difference and help bring about change or not (as the case may be). There are times it seems when the best of intentions go awry and we just cannot save or change the life of another. I particularly liked the approach the authors took toward enumerating the failures and successes of the various NGOs around the world. Some very eye opening facts.

Story after story highlights women affected by female genital mutilation, abuse, rape, forced prostitution, enslavement, acid scarring, the list goes on and on. Kristof & WuDunn illustrate very vividly the global problems resulting from the inequality and lower status of women. It is an eye opener that is for sure, never did I even begin to realise the scope and degree, of the kinds of abuse so many women suffer from throughout the world.

There is a bright light that is the outcome of this amazing book which is: that by empowering women and girls, we can change the world and help end poverty. We can all make a difference and NOW is the time to take your preferred action and be part of the change you would like to see in the world.

A riveting read......

The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn

Author: Florence Scovel Shinn
Review Date: 29 Jul 2011

Talk about ageless wisdom!

Have you ever felt really, really down and been talking to someone and had a book handed to you? This is what happened to me in relation my receiving and reading this book.

It came with a warning, "Try to overlook the "Goddy" parts and just concentrate on the writers translations". Oh, then my friend added, "There are some brilliant affirmations in the book. This is your homework for the next two weeks!".

I came home with the book had a quick flick and said to myself "I am not reading that".

Suffice to say a day or so later I picked the book up and it fell open at a page that had an amazing affirmation on it.

It read "Divine Love dissolves all resistance from my mind, body and affairs. Divine Love is the most powerful chemical in the Universe and dissolves anything that is not of itself!" I was really struck by this affirmation and have to say I have the read the book from cover to cover and have made notes of all the affirmations that jumped out at me.

I have to now return the book, and have decided to buy my own copy.

Ageless, inspiring and a wonderful guide. Well worth gracing your bookshelf!

What really blows me away is this woman died 10 years before I was born!

Do we ever get it????

Eleven Minutes

Author: Paulo Coelho
Review Date: 12 Jul 2011

Eleven Minutes is a book about love and sex..and well, the confusion between the two. Coelho is an amazing author and in this book with the voice of a woman he taps into the feminine with extraordinary deftness.  Eleven Minutes

I love how this book confirms something I have always believed which is that sex and orgasm is a direct link to the Divine.

Maria's journey of self inquiry and sexual exploration is beautifully woven with  rawness and sensuality, with hurt and love, with pain and pleasure.

The final pages of this book are undeniably engaging as we are taken through a most extraordinary journey of sexual synergy and love that is so moving, so passionate, so expressive.

Coelho readers can expect to have their hearts captured yet again.

Just Add Buddha!

Author: Franz Metcalf
Review Date: 26 Jun 2011

Quick Buddhist Solutions for Hellish Bosses, Traffic Jams, Stubborn Spouses, and Other Annoyances of Everyday Life By now I should have your attention... This book is sprinkled with lots of humour. Written with a flair by referring to every day experiences with a great 'say it how it is' mentality, this book will have laughing. This book demonstrates practical situations with practical wisdom. Author Franz Metcalf shows how to weave simple vows, quick rethinks, instant relaxations, fast visualizations, and many other stripped-down Buddhist practices into every area of life. There is a sprinkling of quotes throughout, which always gets you thinking and acknowledging a deeper meaning and wisdom. Just Add Buddha remains steadily and constantly focused on daily life, whilst drawing on the most practical aspects of Buddhism. This is the most user-friendly book on Buddhism for absolute beginners that I've seen, and the writing style is humorous, personal, and honest. Just Ask Buddha!

Roadtesting Happiness; how to be

Road Testing Happiness; How to be Happier (no matter what)

Author: Sophie Scott
Review Date: 14 Jun 2011

Only available on kindle from Amazon

The author Sophie Scott is the ABC's National medical Reporter and in her book Roadtesting Happiness: How to Be Happier (No Matter What), it is because of the death of her mother, that she sets about roadtesting the various sources of happiness offered by experts.

These include Buddhist monk Mathieu Ricard (the 'world's happiest man' ), psychologist Dr Tim Sharp (aka 'Dr Happy') from the Happiness Institute, and Assistant Professor Alice Domar from the Harvard Medical School.

The books shows us how through different modalities such as cognitive behaviour therapy; meditation, mindfulness and spirituality; acceptance and gratitude; altruism and volunteering; food choices and exercise, we can open up and explore who we are, becoming happier in the process.

The book contains some good tips and has listed some great online resources to support the process.

There are interesting stories of other peoples journeys that give insight to the pursuit of happiness.

At the end of the day though it really is an inside job!!

Getting into the Vortex; Guided Meditations CD and User Guide

Author: Esther and Jerry Hicks
Review Date: 09 Jun 2011

Over the years I have spent hundreds (probably thousands) of dollars looking for a meditation that would help me get into the zone. I am pleased to say that I have finally found what I have been looking for.

This book contains a really unique CD upon which are four guided meditations. The book contains a written expansion of what you hear. This expands your understanding of Health, Finances, Physical wellbeing and Relationships and where the Vortex fits in.

The music is what makes the meditations so amazing. There is a beat that is so different, and by breathing in time to the music, you cannot help but shift into another place of being.

The spoken words filter through the mind as you concentrate on the rhythm of breathing in and breathing out.

Simply the best and worth the experience. See for yourself, you could get to really like being in the Vortex.

God`s Callgirl: A Memoir (Hardcover)

Author: Carla van Raay
Review Date: 01 Jun 2011

I met the author of this book many years ago when I lived in Perth. I was part of a women's group at the time and I remember Carla sharing her story and have never forgotten what she had to say.

Her personal story is profound. A journey into, through and beyond oneself.

There is the shaded relationship with her father to the protection of a convent, then the life of a wife and mother to becoming prostitute. Her perspective of that life which eventually brought her to the realisation that she was not bad at all - that she was not broken and did not need fixing.

This is not simply about a former nun gone bad and who then comes good, but a profound journey into and beyond oneself. This book shows the convoluted path one can go down to discover one's true self.

Carla writes in an open and raw manner holding nothing back. One can squirm about the detail, but hey, this is real life, just like the daily life we lead and sometimes shove under. Its remarkable profoundness and raw honesty often hits you in the face. Despite all the pain and humiliation she experienced, Carla writes openly, without judgment and vilification. It is her courageous openness that sets this book apart. A truly remarkable book that I found hard to put down. One can read this book at different levels - from a simple biography, to a journey of finding the core of oneself.
